Our second night was booked at Arcadian Moon, which had several free boondocking sites and the option of two FHU sites for an extra fee. It did cool down further overnight but getting to sleep was a bit sticky.

That first night, we managed to get the rig down from an inside temp of 93 degrees upon arrival around 4pm to 78 degrees when we went to bed around 10pm.

Luckily, Jeremy had recently installed soft start systems on both ACs so we were able to run them one-at-a-time since our generator would have been almost maxed out previously with only one AC running and nothing else drawing power. Tip: Load management is critical when running a generator so you should know the amount of power needed to start up and operate each item or appliance you plan to use. This, combined with daytime temps ranging between 96 and 103 degrees, had us rethinking our next few nights! We were also concerned with the load being placed on the generator as the circuit breaker tripped when the coffee maker came on at the same time the AC was running. We were able to get the generator started the first night but were a bit nervous about whether it would hold up. Our plans quickly changed, however, when we had an unfortunate accident with the generator getting partially crushed by the king pin. Our original plan was to spend the first two nights boondocking at Harvest Host locations and the third night at a first come first-serve campground (or a nearby truck stop if they were full).

The combined total for both memberships is currently $139 per year.Ĭlick here to watch a short video of our journey, including footage of the Harvest Hosts we stayed at. They are also more open to longer stays since they are private residences. Harvest Host locations typically do not offer any hookups and are only for one- or two-nights max, whereas Boondockers Welcome locations are more likely to have electric and water for a small fee. They currently have a combined total of 6,642 sites spread across the country comprised of wineries, breweries, farms, museums, interesting attractions, and private homes. If you are unfamiliar with them, Harvest Hosts and Boondockers Welcome are wonderful programs that offer unique short-term overnight options for RVers. After using the program for our first multi-day trip, we ran the numbers and looked back over our experience to see if it truly was worth it for us.
